Don’t get me wrong, I love my job. I worked hard to get this job and the position I have. My fiance and I both make a good living for being young and having no kids. Yes, the 8-5 job does get stressful at times, but I’m blessed with paid time off and the option to work from home, often.
However, I have always felt that I was not meant for the desk life. It works right now because I am able to save up money for our wedding, traveling, unexpected expenses, and other necessities. I have always felt that I would be doing myself a disservice if I did not put my creativity to good use, and eventually make a living on it. Whether it be bead work, designing clothes, or writing, I have always had a knack for creating things.
The other day I was bored at home, shopping online, and I started thinking about clever ways to come up with graphic tees that would sell. I have seen many girls order custom designed shirts in bulk, so I thought I’d give it a whirl. I started by looking for chicken shirts, something cute and quirky I could wear that would match my personality. When I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for, I designed it!
Although I don’t have the time to commit to a boutique at this point, I have always made a little extra cash with my hobby of bead work, so why not add t-shirts to it? I kicked myself in the head when I very first began designing, I thought “Why did I not do this sooner,” then I realized it was because I have never been able to afford the investment. Selling anything, whether it’s bead work or t-shirts, requires a heck of a start up fee. You have to buy in bulk, you have to know what you’re tax shares will be, you have to be able to invoice people, it’s a process, but one of these days I wouldn’t mind if it paid my bills.
